5 Reasons to add Bolivia to your Travel Bucket List

5 Reasons to add Bolivia to your Travel Bucket List

Locations:

Bolivia, South America

Quaint and charming whilst also adventurous and vibrant, Bolivia is a country of contrast. If you’re interested in hair-raising adventures, breath-taking scenery, and an incredibly unique culture, then Bolivia is waiting for you.

There are a lot of places you must see in Bolivia or you don`t have to but you should.

Bolivia_Self_Drive_Tours

We personally think Bolivia is an incredibly interesting country with some of the most incredible sights and historical wonders. Here’s some places that we covered while driving through Bolivia on the South America Expedición 2018 and are high up on our recommendation list:

La Paz:

Sitting in a valley in the Andes Mountains, La Paz is the city that touches the clouds. The de facto capital of Bolivia, sitting between 3300 and 4100 meters above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. With activities ranging from the adrenaline pumping Mi Teleferico (cable cars) to the more cultural ones, it was impossible to be bored while exploring the city in the sky!

Adios La Paz, you’ve taken our breath away (quite literally)

Uyuni Salt Flats:

There is probably no traveller or tourist that leaves Bolivia without having visited the main tourist attraction in Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni. It is the world’s largest salt flat at 4,086 square miles. It’s the legacy of a prehistoric lake that went dry, leaving behind a desertlike landscape of bright-white salt, rock formations. The harsh beauty and desolateness of Salar de Uyuni definitely made for an incredible experience.

Laguna Verde:

One of Bolivia’s most striking sight, Laguna Verde (which literally means ‘green lake’) is a stunning emerald-green mineral salt lake set on the backdrop of Licancabur volcano. This stunning lake is also home to three species of flamingos. The pink of the flamingos and the reddish-brown tones of the hot springs contrast beautifully against the green colour of the lake. With its beauty, nature and location, this unique and stunning lake left us in awe. There is simply nothing else in the world like Laguna Verde.

Stone Tree:

The Stone Tree is an isolated rock made out of sandstone that is shaped like a stunted tree. Located in the altiplano sand dunes of the Siloli Desert, it is one of the driest places in the world.

Valle de la Luna:

Located in the driest desert on earth, this legendary moon valley is surrounded by volcanic peaks that cascade as far as the eye can see. Because the mineral content of the mountains varies, the sides appear to be different colors, creating striking optical illusions during sunrise and sunset.

Bolivia is literally the heart of South America, a country full of mountains, deserts, jungle and anything you can imagine (well except a coastline) and we cannot seem to have enough of it. While our drive through Bolivia came to an end, the journey on South America Expedición continues. Stay tuned for more updates.
