Even with the world right now caught in a frenzied fight for survival against Coronavirus, we at Adventures Overland remain optimistic in our belief that this too shall pass and soon the world will be back to normal – ready to be explored in all its glory.
But till such a time arrives, the need of the hour is to stay home, stay safe and help break the chain.
If you are looking for some inspirational entertainment to devour while at home, we have compiled a list of movies that has road escapades as their central theme. While there are many films that stay true to this brief, the following four are unmissable, and for all the right reasons too!
It Happened One Night is a 1934 classic romantic comedy, starring Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. The plot, which has a spoilt heiress rebelling against her father by eloping with a rich suitor and eventually falling in love with an out-of-job reporter, is based on a 1933 short story by American novelist Samuel Hopkins Adams titled ‘Night Bus’.
This celebrated celluloid masterpiece was also the first film ever to win all the five major Academy Awards (Oscars) – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
With sparkling dialogues, amazing chemistry between its lead pair and presence of vintage automobiles like the 1926-27 Ford Model T and the deluxe 1931 LaSalle Phaeton, It Happened One Night checks all the boxes when it comes to fabulous road movies that entertain and inspire.
Featuring stellar performances by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, the 1991 road movie Thelma & Louise was definitely way ahead of its time, and has since then become an absolute milestone in the realm of feminist films.
A weekend getaway of two friends – the lightheaded housewife Thelma, and the fiery waitress Louise – takes a more than dramatic turn when unforeseen circumstances force them to turn into outlaws. The pair is consequently on the run from the authorities, and gloriously decides to drive-off to their deaths from the edge of a cliff at the Grand Canyon.
Shot in California and Utah, Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise features the 1966 Ford Thunderbird and deserves a dekko not just for its edge-of-the-seat road trip action, but also its theme of women finally breaking the mould (even if with a seemingly tragic ending) to take their lives in their own hands.
