North America
What is it about the idea of a grand road trip that bewitches people into letting themselves go? Is it the sense of uninhibited freedom it affords; the insight it offers into humanity; or the almost psychedelic experience of witnessing landscapes of so many hues and textures? Maybe it’s all of these factors that come together in one enthralling sojourn. And if there is one place in the world that comes blessed with a significant number of picturesque paths that irresistibly summon the traveller in you, its the United States of America. A country without roadblocks (more figurative than literal!), where all you need is a vehicle and a license to drive, America has all the makings of a roadtripper’s dream vacation.
Herein we enlist for you three of the many superlative cross-country routes that US has in store for you:
A stunning example of a junket where the journey transforms into a destination in itself, the PCH arrives filled up to the brim with amazing, endless views. A designated ‘All-American Road’, this exemplary highway runs along the Calfornian coast, covering about 655 miles of the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. Stretching from San Francisco to San Diego, it hosts a number of classic sites like the Golden Gate Bridge, Bixby Creek Bridge, Big Sur National Park and the Alcatraz amidst many others enroute.
As vintage as they come, the historic Route 66 was established in the year 1926 and was one of the primary highways in the U.S. Highway System. Known by several names such as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America and the Mother Road, Route 66 covered a total of 2,448 miles back then. Originally stretching all the way from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica in Los Angeles, California, the Mother Road was officially decommissioned in the year 1985. Owing to its archaeological, historical and cultural significance several major sections of it have been designated a ‘National Scenic Byway’ by the American government, going by the name of Historic Route 66.
The James W. Dalton Highway, also referred to as the North Slope Haul Road, is known the worldover as one of the most isolated and trickiest roads to maneuver. A two-lane gravel road that stretches for 414 miles, the highway runs parallel to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System with only three towns along the route for company. The holy grail for a bonafide thrill-seeker, the Dalton Highway has been featured on American television shows like Ice Road Truckers, America’s Toughest Jobs and the BBC’s World’s Most Dangerous Roads.
As Jack Kerouac aptly surmised in his defining American masterpiece ‘On The Go’, “All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.” We at Adventures Overland share your passion for all things travel and promise to turn your vision into a reality – accompanied by nothing but utmost convenience, luxury and grandeur.
