“I have fantasies of going to Iceland, never to return.” Edward Gorey
Iceland has been known to be blessed with the ability to turn the commonplace into the exceptional. And we were all prepared to be swept away by the overwhelming beauty of the land of fire and ice as we took off from India on an incomparable adventure. Our arrival to this magnificent country was marked by the infectious energy of its capital, Reykjavík.

The second day of our road trip began with an introduction to our monster trucks. We were handed over the keys and coached in the basics of the powerful 4×4 modified trucks that were goingto be our travel companions on this extraordinary journey. Our convoy rolled on towards the foot of the Langjökull Glacier, the second-largest glacier of Europe from where we drove up the glacier to explore a manmade Ice Cave driving over a blanket of snow for a couple of hours. Witnessing the hidden and the beautiful blue ice in the heart of the glacier was an incredible experience and a first for everyone in the group!

Day three of our tour had us driving across what can be justly described as the most popular route in Iceland, the Golden Circle. Amidst all the natural beauty of this peerless destination, the Golden Circle route stands out for its characteristic variety.Thingvellir National Park (a certified UNESCO World Heritage Site), Geysir Geothermal Field and the mighty Gullfoss Waterfalls are the three major attractions on this route. The cherry on the cake was to ride atop powerful snowmobiles on a glacier, which felt like an almost other-worldly experience.

The next day was the best driving day of the entire expedition as we drove the whole day over snowy terrains crossing rivers, driving on slippery ice, tackling side walls of snow, deflating and inflating tires based on the thickness of the snowy terrain ahead of us and finally reaching the mountain hut located far away from civilisation. After relaxing and enjoying a bath in a natural hot spring outside the mountain hut, we went back to the hut and cooked a BBQ leg of lamb ourselves!

The following day we continued our delicate drive on the snowy ground towards the south coast of Iceland, which is known to be gifted with a particularly varied landscape. Post dinner, we saw a spectacular display of the Northern Lights in the sky and witnessed the gorgeous green lights dancing in the sky and changing shapes every few minutes.

The penultimate day of our journey had us visiting the last piece of the delightful puzzle that was Iceland. The therapeutic exquisiteness of the Blue Lagoon warmed and soothed us to the depths of our soul. This body of mineral-rich milky-blue water proved to be unlike anything we had ever come across before. We capped off this day with a delectable farewell dinner where we enjoyed each other’s company on our last night in this gorgeous country.
