If anything gets a pack of travellers feeling hyped it’s the prospect of 9-days exploring one of the most diverse destinations in Asia. Start your “Taiwan exploration” trip from Taipei, the glittering capital of Taiwan. After passing through customs and luggage collection, your guide/ tour captain will take you to the hotel, where you can spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Three days in Taipei means plenty of time to get a taste of the place. Taipei is full of vibrant night markets lined up with stalls of delicious food, artsy neighbourhoods, impressive architecture, gorgeous scenery, natural hot springs, and charming neighbouring villages to visit. Get ready to tick off some landmark locations, starting from the beautiful national monument of Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial, which offers great photo opportunities. Also, witness the changing of guard ceremony here, before heading to Longshan temple, which is located in Wanhua, the city’s oldest neighbourhood. At this temple, you will find good fortune, good health and spiritual advice of all sorts.
Any guesses where we are heading next? There’s quite literally no way you can leave Taipei without seeing Taipei 101. Once upon a time, this was the world’s tallest buildings, and you can (will) soar to the top for a breath-taking view of the city.
After lunch, hike through tea plantations and take a ride on the Maokong Gondola cable car line for another look at Taipei. The day ends with a visit to the grand-daddy of all Taipei night markets, Shilin Night Market. Here you can join the locals in finding that next great snack or landing a spectacular bargain.
Taipei & Taroko
Who’s excited to see one of the seven wonders of Asia, the Taroko Gorge? Tighten your shoe laces and charge your camera, as we are heading out to discover the spectacular beauty of Taroko National Park (also known as Taroko Gorge).
With 19 kilometers of steep mountainous slopes dropping off into deep, crystal-clear ravines, it truly is a site to behold. Today we’ll spend the day travelling through the Taroko Gorge, known for its stunning sheer marble cliffs, and view the Eternal Spring Shrine, which is one of the most photographed scenes around the gorge. We will even be visiting Gorge Gateway (photo stop); Shakadang Trail; Swallow Grotto trail; Tse-Mu Bridge; and more before returning to Taipei by train.
Taipei (Northern Coast)
Close your eyes and let us drop you in the Yehliu Geopark. Now open your eyes but don’t get confused…you are still on Earth and not on Mars! Rare hoodoo stones, rock spires and sedimentary formations make up the Yehliu Geopark. You can spend several hours wandering the natural landscape while snapping photos of otherworldly rock formations that have been given imaginative names based on their shapes. The most well-known is the “The Queen’s Head”, “The Fairy Shoe”, “The Bee Hive”, “The Ginger Rocks” and “The Sea Candles”.
The tour continues with a visit to Chiufen Village (Jiufen), formerly the gold mining center of Taiwan. Wander through Jiufen Old Street, where you can find signs of the Japanese occupation, ancient teahouses, food stalls, and handicrafts.
We saved the best for the last today! Get ready to pinch yourself as you witness hundreds of lanterns light up the night sky at Shifen Village. Join the celebration of the first full moon of the lunar year at the Taiwan’s Lantern Festival by lighting a lantern.
This isn’t “TANGLED” the Movie, It’s REAL.
Taipei – Sun Moon Lake
Today we will make our way to the Sun Moon Lake. Trust us, this place is really as beautiful as the postcards from Taiwan make it look.
The Sun Moon Lake is the largest body of water in Taiwan and the lake, along with its surrounding countryside has been designated as one of thirteen national scenic areas in Taiwan. We suggest that you rent a bike and explore the spectacular views at your own pace. The Sun Moon Lake cycling trail is reported by CNN Go as one of the most beautiful cycling trails in the world.
Sun Moon Lake – Kaohsiung
Now that Sun Moon Lake has charmed you, it’s time to strut our way to Kaohsiung, the biggest city in Taiwan. Kaohsiung is best known for the Dragon & Tiger pagodas located at the Lotus pond north of downtown, the most fascinating thing is the zigzag pathway which is meant to deflect evil. Make sure you enter through the dragon’s mouth and exit through the tiger’s mouth for good fortune. We will also visit the Lotus Pond, Creative Park, Spring & Autumn Pavilion and Ten-Drum Park. Next, we will head to Cijin Island, wherein you can enjoy swimming, sun bathing, biking, and/sunset watching. The evening is free to explore the city at leisure.
Kaohsiung – Pingtung
It’s the second last day of our Taiwan tour and we are going to witness millions of sky lanterns floating in the air. We know watching the Lantern festival just once wasn’t enough, that is why today we’ll head to Pingtung to witness the magic once again. Get your camera ready and on max charge, as this will be the day of pretty.
That’s not all that we have in store for you. En-route, we will stop at Kenting to experience its tropical climate, beautiful beaches and paradise like atmosphere.
Kaohsiung – Taipei
The end might be near, but we are in no hurry to start winding down the adventure. Today we’ll head back to Taipei. Once in Taipei, indulge in a hearty meal at a local Indian restaurant before getting your hands on a fun DIY pineapple cake (veg) activity (you can take some home too).
Want more? Let’s head to the Electronic mall and then make our way to the weekend Jade market. For the girls, we suggest you get your hands on the fancy fade facial roller, that are all the rage these days.
End the day with a good night’s rest.
That’s a wrap! Our Taiwan love affair has officially come to a close but the memories of this beautiful holiday will stay with us forever. Say goodbye to your fellow travellers with a promise to meet once again in another exotic location sometime, somewhere, in another beautiful part of our world.
