In recent years, Jordan has become a popular destination for those who want to travel the off-beat path. The starkly beautiful landscape of Jordan prepares you for a visual delight with its beauty, as does the mix of seascapes and sand dunes. The Arabian patina, mixed with unique areas such as Petra and the formidable Dead Sea, take us to places we can only remember reading in history books. Let’s travel to Jordan uniquely by driving in a convoy of Land Cruisers through its historical roads, dune bashing on Wadi Rum and floating in the Dead Sea. Adventures Overland team is delighted to launch its first all-women guided, self-driving trip with an all-women crew. Intrigued? Keep reading and sign up soon, as this is a limited-capacity trip.

ROAD TO LONDON
Jordan is an experience that will either become a remarkable ‘forever’ memory or a journey that you would crave to experience time and again. It is a Middle Eastern ethereal gem that transcends your heart and soul into a space-time where all things feel, just perfect.
Amman welcomes you with open arms and some beautiful vibes of the Middle East. As you get escorted to your hotel from the Queen Alia International Airport, you can feel the build-up of excitement for the days ahead and meet a fun tribe at the melting pot of Jordan. Your first evening of this amazing trip begins with a sit-down dinner with fellow travellers as you begin to enjoy the relaxed vibe of Amman and spend the night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
The deep historical roots of Jordan are apparent in its architecture. Day Two begins with breakfast and a coach ride towards Jerash, which has some of the most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture outside of Italy. As you stroll down the colonnaded streets of Jerash, resplendent with temples and theatres, you will recognize the dominant impact of one of the world’s oldest civilizations. We head back to Amman for a Lebanese lunch and are free to discover Amman before heading for dinner with the group at a local restaurant. A day well spent, indeed.
Wadi, Arabic for ‘valley’, offers space and nature’s remarkable wonders. As our convoy prepares to head into Wadi Rum after breakfast, one can feel the dance between the swoop of the convoy and one of the world’s most scenic roads, The King’s Highway. As our 4x4s drive down the vintage slopes to reach Wadi Al Hasa, the longest and most beautiful valley, or Wadi, in Jordan, also known as Jordan’s Water Park with its natural gardens of palm trees, warm springs and hidden pools as it meanders towards the Dead Sea. In true Bedouin style, we spend the night glamping at the Space Village Luxury Camp in very comfortable tents and experiencing the open skies in a desert.
Very little can prepare you for this day of amazement at Wadi Rum. The day of offroading and epic dune bashing will take you back in time and give you a whole Arabian experience as you drive on the sand dunes in the Valley of the Moon. Ancient graffiti inscriptions, canyons, natural rock bridges, and incredible natural sculptures will offer views you may not have seen before. The off-roading experience is along the southern border of Wadi Rum through the old Roman Road. As you learn how to drive confidently on a Mars like terrain, you will recognise the locale for many legendry movies such as Star Wars, The Martians and so on. The perfect day at Wadi Rum invites a perfect sunset setting over the edges of this beautiful desert.
One of the beautiful things about Jordan is the diversity of experiences one can enjoy while travelling the country. After Wadi Rum’s gorgeous desert experience, we head to Aqaba, Jordan’s only seaport. Aqaba is a city steeped in history as it was ruled by the Romans, Mamluks and Ottomans and, at the same time, offers sailing boat experiences along its beautiful coast. A leisurely lunch aboard a private yatch adds to the holiday vibe as you sail past Jordan, Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia at the Red Sea. For the water sports lovers, there are many options to explore. You can dive and snorkel to see some beautiful underwater scenery in the sparkling warm water of the Red Sea. The calm weather makes for a relaxing day which can only be completed with a chance to enjoy the street food of Aqaba and retire for the night at a Hilton Hotel.
Petra may not need any introduction. It only needs to be experienced to understand that not all those who wander are lost! As we wander into one of the new 7 Wonders of the World, we can truly understand why it is a UNESCO Heritage site. As we head to Petra, we are greeted by the ‘rosered’ city and a drive which is both relaxing and timeless. As you walk around in Petra past the Siq to the Treasury imagining all the people who have walked these roads before you. The unusual ambience, traditional Jordanian music and the local Bedouins transport you into a beautiful and peaceful state of mind.
It’s little wonder that Petra has been chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the ‘28 Places to See Before You Die”. We only have a few words that can do it justice, and it’s one of the places where even photographs may not truly showcase the vastness of historical beauty it is nestled in. We spend our day at Petra, not just ‘sightseeing’ but ‘sight soaking’ as we are bound to leave with lifelong memories. For history buffs, Petra was the capital city of Nabataeans from circa 300 BC to 100 AD and is a beautiful city half-built and half-carved into its rocky sides and is surrounded by mountains resplendent with passages and gorges. The ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture leaving visitors in awe.
Like Petra, the Dead Sea and its natural healing properties don’t need much introduction. As we leave Petra and head to the shores of the Dead Sea, via the Dead Sea Highway, which is the lowest point on Earth, the beautiful blue waters provide a sense of calm. The high salt content of the Dead Sea makes it the perfect place for people to float without assistance. As we sunbathe at the beach, we are also on the last day of driving, and the evening is well spent at a resort in the vicinity as we spend the night at a Hilton hotel here. Jordan’s rugged beauty opens our eyes to explore the world in many different ways, and you would have concluded one of the most exciting road trips of most people’s lifetimes.
The black mud of the Dead Sea has been known for its therapeutic spa-like feeling. Travel is much like therapy. As the adventurous road trip concludes, you are likely to take back many fun memories, inside jokes, a phone full of photos and videos and a promise to meet this tribe again : )
